Event Details
Wild Ones (wildones.org) is a national organization promoting environmentally sound landscaping practices to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration, and establishment of native plant communities. The local chapter of Wild Ones is now a program offered at the Petoskey District Library, meeting on the second Saturday of each month in the lower level classroom to share information and learn about native plants. The public is always welcome!
TOPIC FOR THE FEBRUARY 8 MEETING:
Homegrown National Park and Keystone Plants & Using Them in Landscapes
Bret Huntman of North by Nature Landscapes will be our speaker at the February meeting. Brett’s presentation will begin with a brief introduction about how you can become part of Homegrown National Park, the largest “national park” in the country, by restoring habitat and creating beautiful landscapes around you. Then, learn about “keystone” plants that support the most animal species, how to use these plants in your landscapes, and some of the insects you might attract to your property. Homegrown National Park was introduced by entomologist, ecologist, and conservationist Doug Tallamy. He discusses the concept in his book Nature’s Best Hope, a highly recommended addition to your reading list!
